Boots' £26 product 'very effective' for anyone with thinning hair (2025)

Shoppers have praised a "very effective" women's hair loss treatment that's said to deliver "great volume and beautiful hair that most people envy." Priced at £25.95 at Boots, the Regaine For Women Regular Strength Minoxidil 2% Scalp Solution -1 Month Supply is designed for women aged 18-65.

Boots' product description says: "Regaine for Women Regular Strength is used to treat common hereditary hair loss in women aged 18-65 years. It is thought that it works by aiding the blood flow to the cells in your scalp, which grow hair. The exact process by which this occurs is not known.

"Regaine for Women Regular Strength works best in women who have general hair thinning of the scalp. Those who are younger or have been losing hair for a short period of time are likely to respond best to Regaine for Women Regular Strength."

The description notes that the product could be suitable for you if your hair loss started gradually and progressed, you have a family history of hair loss, and no other symptoms are present. Unfortunately, it adds that you are unlikely to benefit from the treatment if you have a large area of hair loss or you've experienced thinning for many years.

While the enclosed leaflet explains how to use the treatment in full detail, Boots notes the "clinically proven treatment" is applied "direct to the scalp to treat women's thinning hair." Anyone with health concerns should speak to a GP, and you should consult your doctor before taking new medication.

Reviewers gave the product an average rating of 3.7/5, while 67% of reviewers said they would recommend it. A happy customer wrote: "Very effective. In Regaine for Women I have found the answer to my hair loss problem which was causing me much distress. It is easy to apply and within 2 weeks I was already seeing new hair growth. This has continued, giving back much of the hair I had lost."

They continued: "The only drawback for me is that there is a build-up of product on the hair, meaning I have to wash my hair more frequently than usual, but that is a price worth paying. I love the way my hair looks now; what a huge relief!"

A second reviewer commented: "I have used the product for years. The product works as directed. If you are patient and expect genuine results, this is for you. It works from deep down the roots, then the length after some months. Once the length start increasing, you develop great volume and beautiful hair that most people envy."

Another shared: "Only a few days and can already see my hair growing recomend this product highly." A reviewer echoed: "I can see the results. I have lots of baby hair since I started using it. I've used only 1 bottle. Lasted for 2 months."

However, someone else replied: "I've been using this product for a month and it doesn't work. I haven't seen any difference. I bought the women's one because I saw that my partner was using the men's version and it was working for him."

A different reviewer added: "I have been using this product for 6 months and have noticed no change in my hair. The product may work for certain people but as stated on the box this is designed for women with hereditary hair thinning which applied to me.

"I have seen no change yet but I will persevere and keep using Regaine for a while longer. Maybe I haven't used it for long enough." Another response read: "Bought this product recommended by a friend, however it gave me the worst dandruff I have ever had! Scalp itching and had to stop using ... Such a waste of money!"

Haircare shoppers might prefer ChampoPitta growth serum 50ml, which is £46 at Selfridges, Bio-Pilixin Serum, which is £49 at Scandinavian Biolabs, or The Inkey List's Caffeine stimulating scalp treatment, which is £14.95 at Beauty Bay.

Information about hair loss is available on the NHS website. Lloyds Pharmacy's website also has a page dedicated to female hair loss advice, reports the Mirror. Lloyds Pharmacy says: "If hair loss is caused by an underlying condition, then treatment of that condition should take precedence.

"If the hair loss is caused by an illness, a temporary medical treatment or a period of stress, then the hair should grow back on its own. Lifestyle factors such as diet can be addressed to reduce damage to the hair and improve nutrition. Hairstyling, such as avoiding tight braids, extensions and weaves, can also help with hair loss."
