Before you swipe on your foundation or tap on a finishing powder, you might be forgetting something crucial to your look’s longevity: face primer. We all have our desired makeup look in mind, and using a primer tailored to our end goal and skin’s specific needs may just be the step to elevate a makeup look. So, how do you know which primer is right for you? Like most things in beauty, a test drive is necessary.
“The best face primers come in various categories,” says celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose, whose clients include Priyanka Chopra and Lupita Nyong’o. “Some help with smoothing out pores and fine lines so that your foundation goes on smoother; others help ensure that extra glow and bring out your inner radiance.” And that’s not all. According to Barose, the best face primers will help makeup last longer, prevent colors from fading away, and control shine for those with oily skin. In short, it’s a quick extra step that will give your makeup look whatever it’s been missing. “Think of primer as a custom [makeup] boost,” Barose says.

What is a face primer, and what does it do?
“A face primer is a makeup product that is used before complexion application,” Ospina says. “It helps foundation and other complexion products blend more seamlessly and creates a smooth, even surface. It can also help your makeup look fresh for several hours.”
How do you know what primer is best for you?
“To choose a face primer based on your skin type, you have to consider your skin needs,” Ospina says. Below, he breaks down his recommendations based on skin type:
For dry skin: “Look for a hydrating primer with ingredients like Hyaluronic acid and Vitamin E.”
For oily skin: “Look for a mattifying primer that has ingredients like silica and salicylic acid. The Make Up For Ever primer is perfect for oily skin. It controls the excess of oil and shine, and it gives you a matte finish.”
For sensitive skin: “Look for a water-based primer. This is a great choice for sensitive skin that gets red easily. A water-based primer is less likely to cause irritation and is also hydrating. Those with sensitive skin should also look for a primer that is alcohol and fragrance-free.”

How do you apply primer?
“Generally, you want to squeeze out a pea-size drop of face primer and then massage it all over the face after your moisturizer has fully absorbed—or you can blot away excess with tissue first,” Barose says. “Then apply foundation on top.” For the shine-control type of primer, there’s no need to apply it all over the face, Barose says. Instead, just apply it to the T-Zone area. And for those with textured skin, Barose recommends using a primer with silicone on areas with enlarged pores or fine lines that need smoothing out. “You don’t need it on the rest of the face,” he says.
